Plaid Cane
by Mia Rox
Materials Needed:
  • Blocks of clay in 1-3 colors of your choice
  • Coordinating clay for wrapping and lines (I used pearl, but any type will do)
  • Pasta machine
  • Nublade or tissue blade
Step 1: make a skinner blend log of your choice (see skinner blend lesson for how tool's) I used purple, blue and red translucent but any blend will work. In fact you don't necessarily have to use a skinner blend at all. One color will work fine. Shape this log in to a square shape. then using your pasta machine roll out a sheet of clay (I used pearl) on a medium setting. And roll out another on the thinnest setting.
Step 2: Using a sharp blade (I prefer a regular Nublade, not the flex kind, because of it's strength and unwillingness to bend), slice off about one third of the square log.
Step 3: Place the small piece you just cut off onto the thickest sheet of clay you rolled out and trim around it.
Step 4: Put the log back together.
Step 5: Slice the reassembled log, this time about in half. Then use the thinnest sheet of clay that you rolled and repeat Step 3.
Step 6: Place the log back together and repeat Steps 2 - 4, but now in a perpendicular direction. Repeat Step 5, but again in the same perpendicular direction.
Step 7: After you have place the log back together it will look like the picture at the right.
Step 8: Finally, wrap your cane with a sheet of matching clay. I used the one I rolled out on a medium setting.
