KRISTY ZGODA

Your Company Name: Critter Craft
Email Address/Web Page: jimmyz@wcnet.org
City & State:
Type of Craft: Polymer clay

Tell us in your own words, how you discovered polymer clay and how long have you been using it?

I came across it 11 or 12 years ago when trying out different sculpting products.

Are there any special artists that you can attribute your interest to or that have inspired you?

No. ...but I have been experimenting with some Monet- type  techniques on the background of my pins...a 'suggestion' of flowers rather than every petal.

What is your specialty?

Animal caricatures come easiest to me, but I LOVE to 'paint' with FIMO, working in realism.

Can you tell us why you find polymer clay the expressive medium for you?

I was a successful portraiture artist before I found the polymer clay. I haven't been able to put the clay down since the day I found it. 'Painting' my creatures with Fimo is more enjoyable than with a paint brush for me!

Have you published any polymer clay books or do you have any in the works?

No....it would be very difficult to show people how to do it in a book or in person.

I know it is very difficult to express, but have you won any awards for your polymer clay work?

I have  never attended craft shows. I make dog jewelry for a living, so I go to dog shows to sell it. I didn't know there were polymer awards.

What are your expectations for the future? Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?

I presently spend 80-100 hours/week on production which gives me little time for original create.  The creation being the absolute best part of it, we are going to start mass- production on the jewelry end to afford me more time for the original creativity. So, in five years, I'll be doing it strictly for the love of it on a full-time basis instead of the production that I am doing now.

Do you have any advice for the beginning polymer clay enthusiasts?

Be persistant!  It's a labor of love and just like raising children, takes more than just a few hours a week to do a good job.

Are you a member of any Polymer Clay group,or any other craft organization?

No.

What brands of polymer clay do you prefer and why?

Fimo and Cernit....the color bakes pretty 'true' and they're the most structurally sound.I have baked thousands of pieces and they have NEVER cracked..I even had someone back their car over one of my pins and it didn't break!...it just needed a new bar pin!

Last and most important can you tell us all about you? Your family, your training?

I come from a family of artists. My sister and I both painted and drew in Realism.. duplicating critters is my favorite. My husband Jim and I have two sons,  ages 10 and 12 and  two grown sons from previous marriages. We have always been self employed.
